How Ballet Became My Sanctuary – Mary’s Story

I’m an attorney with a background in Latin dance—salsa, bachata, Brazilian Zouk. I had never tried a solo dance form until I stumbled into a ballet class by accident. I say stumbled because I truly didn’t know what I was doing. The teacher at that first class didn’t explain the basics. I had no idea what position I was in—or was supposed to be in. But something about ballet stuck with me.

Then I discovered Align Ballet Method, and everything changed.

From the first workshop, I felt like I’d found what I didn’t know I was missing. Align gave me the fundamentals in a way that was clear, digestible, and empowering. Each class was a building block, and I finally had the structure I needed to learn and grow.

Now, I’m completely addicted.

I’m obsessed with the beauty, discipline, and clarity ballet brings to my life. I’m incredibly active—HIIT training six days a week, 25 pull-ups, you name it—but ballet? It worked muscles I didn’t even know I had. It’s the best workout I’ve ever had.

More than that, ballet has become my sanctuary. I work in a fast-paced environment, often covering breaking news and preparing for live on-air segments. I try to make it to class before I go on camera, because the breathwork and focus of ballet center me in a way nothing else does. It’s my meditation. My zen.

One phrase from our instructor Michael stuck with me: “My role as an instructor is to protect you from yourself.” That meant everything. I can be my own worst critic, constantly in my head. But Align is different. The atmosphere is supportive, warm, and kind. The instructors meet you where you are. They don’t expect perfection—they guide you toward progress.

Even when I was terrified to try tour jetés—those still scare me, by the way—I felt encouraged. Michael always provides helpful feedback, and the entire class community lifts each other up. I’ve made real friendships here. One friend, Jane, even gifted me my first leotard and tights to encourage me to keep going.

Since starting ballet at Align:

I’ve gained strength, balance, and a deeper understanding of my body.

My posture has transformed, and I feel more confident both in and out of the studio.

I sleep better. Ballet has literally helped reset my circadian rhythm.

I feel more connected to myself than ever before. For one hour, I’m fully present—and that’s a gift.

Most of all, I’ve discovered that I can actually do this. I never grew up dancing, but that doesn’t matter here. Align is for anyone willing to trust the process.

If you’re even thinking about trying ballet, I’ll just say this: Don’t be afraid. Trust yourself. Align is more than a class. It’s a community. A method. A place to grow. A place to breathe.

And yes—the music is phenomenal. Especially when we have a live pianist in class. It’s magic.
