More Than Movement: Teaching Ballet at Align Changed My Life
I didn’t always know I wanted to teach ballet—but I always knew I loved to dance. I started at a small studio when I was just three years old. Over the years, I trained in a wide range of styles, from ballet and jazz to contemporary, refining my craft with each new experience. My journey even led me to work with Petra Conti and Eris Nezha—an unforgettable milestone in my dance career.
But teaching? That came from something deeper. I had instructors who believed in me—who challenged me and uplifted me—and I realized I wanted to be that person for someone else.
When I began teaching at Align Ballet Method, something clicked. It wasn’t just about pliés and tendus—it was about transformation. About the way adult students walk into the studio with nerves and walk out taller, stronger, more confident. That’s the magic of teaching ballet at Align.
Connecting with Adult Beginners
Adults come into class with different fears than kids. They wonder if they’re too late, too stiff, or too ungraceful. I see those thoughts in their eyes the first time they walk through the door. That’s why the first thing I say is: “You can do this.”
Creating a welcoming space is essential. At Align, we meet people where they are. We celebrate the courage it takes to show up. I remind my students that ballet is a journey, and perfection isn’t the goal—presence is.
My Approach to Teaching Ballet
My classes are challenging, but always infused with encouragement. I’ve been told I’m nurturing but tough—which I’ll take as a compliment! I love breaking down complex movements, talking about shape and intention, and offering modifications for different skill levels. Whether it’s slowing down a combination or offering an advanced variation, I want every student to feel included and empowered.
The Power of Ballet for Mental Health
One of my students once said our weekly workshop was the only hour she had to herself—her time to breathe, to move, to reconnect. That stayed with me. Ballet can be a powerful tool for mental and emotional well-being. It teaches patience, discipline, and self-compassion. Watching my students transform not only physically but mentally is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
What Makes Align Ballet Method Different
Align isn’t just another adult ballet program—it’s a community built on encouragement, excellence, and a simple but profound belief: that ballet is for everyone. It’s not about having the perfect turnout or years of training. It’s about saying yes to something new, and being supported every step of the way.
What I love most is the culture of “yes.” Yes, you can try. Yes, you can grow. Yes, you belong here. It’s that sense of connection—between students, between teachers—that makes Align feel like home.
Looking Ahead
My journey with Align is still unfolding. I hope to expand our offerings in Silverlake, develop new ways of teaching, and continue being a small part of each dancer’s transformation. Because at the end of the day, this isn’t just a job—it’s a calling. And I’m so grateful to be living it.
